The Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system is a general knowledge organization tool used in libraries and other institution across the world.
In the DDC, basic classes are organized by disciplines or fields of study. At the broadest level, the DDC is divided into ten main classes, which together cover the entire world of knowledge. Each main class is further divided into ten divisions, and each division into ten sections (not all the numbers for the divisions and sections have been used).

Melvil Dewey worked in the library at Amherst College during his last 2 years as a student and for the 2 years following his graduation. During this time, he investigated the classification systems of several libraries and began to develop his own ideas. "His work culminated in 1876, when he published A Classification and Subject Index for Cataloguing and Arranging the Books and Pamphlets of a Library. This system, still in use today in most public and some college libraries, was his major contribution to his profession." |
