GIS Software

What is GIS? Geographical Information System. Spacial Data or digital data that contains location-based information. Addresses Coordinates (latitude/longitude). Three dimensional map elements

ESRI's ArcGIS: ACU now has limited seats for ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro  and ArcGIS Online . If you would like access to any of these please email Mark McCallon. We also have access to apps including Explorer for ArcGIS, Collector (for collecting data in the field), and ESRI maps for office.

ArcGIS Online : Free online GIS software program from ESRI. Create a username and password and you can search for, upload, view, create and save maps and data. 

Google Earth Pro: Google Earth Pro gives you more capabilities than Google Earth and is now available for free! Click through the link to download and register your free account. This software allows for upload, download of geospatial data as well as basic manipulation.

US Census Data Mapper: Web mapping application for census mapping. 

OnTheMap : This is a web-based mapping and reporting application from the US Census Bureau,  that shows where workers are employed and where they live. It also provides companion reports on age, earnings, industry distributions, race, ethnicity, educational attainment, and sex

TIGERweb: Online application for TIGER data from the US Census. 

Local GIS Data

City of Abilene GIS data  : Zoning, buildings, flood zones and more data available to use online from the city of Abilene.

 

Texas GIS data

Texas Natural Resources Information System: GIS data portal for maps and data, as well as GIS training and news. This is the largest collection of historical geographic data sets for the state of TX. Data includes SPOT imagery, elevation, geology and more. 

Texas Commission on Environmental Quality: Data is available in shp and kml format. Data includes administrative, water, land and landuse/ cover.  They also have a data viewer online. 

Texas General Land Office - Various GIS data in ArcView shape file format. Includes Oil and Gas Leases, Oil Spill Response Mapping Tool, Coastal Sediments Geodatabase and more. 

US GIS Data by Subject

CrimeStat : Download this program and data from the National Institute of Justice for analysis of crime incident locations. 

Census Business Builder: Small Business Edition:  This product allows you to map out demographic information along with business information. For example, if you wanted to start a new dental office, you could select variables you are interested in such as what neighborhood in Abilene has the highest population with health insurance? 

American GIS Data

US Cartographic Boundary Shapefiles: These are representations of selected geographic areas from the Census Bureau's geographic database. Shapefiles work in ArcGIS (ESRI software) or you can download these in KML format for use in Google Maps/Earth. 

TIGER products: Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Reference. Contain features such as roads, railroads, rivers, wells, as well as legal and statistical areas. 

National Historical Geographic Information System: Free aggregate census data and GIS boundary files for the US between 1790-2013. 

USGS National Map:  Topographic GIS data, online mapping and maps (GeoPDF).

Bureau of Labor Statistics GIS tool: Information related to geographic areas of the USA, related to markets, careers and occupational outlook.
