Academic Integrity & Plagiarism

This guide provides examples of plagiarism, and tips and resources to help students avoid plagiarism.

What is Plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the act of representing another person's work or ideas as your own.

Concepts of academic integrity, honesty, and plagiarism avoidance are very important to academia and higher education. It is unethical and dishonest to claim you came up with something created by someone else and to fail to give the creator credit.

Plagiarism usually occurs on accident, without malicious intent, but it is still treated seriously. Make sure you understand plagiarism so you can avoid it.

Practicing academic integrity and honesty starts with acknowledging other's work and how it has informed your own work. The information on this guide includes videos, quizzes, and tutorials to help you avoid plagiarism and cite properly.

Why Should I Cite?

  • To give credit to the author's work (avoid plagiarism)
  • To help other researchers find your sources
  • To help support your ideas
  • To add to the body of knowledge in your subject
  • To show that you know your subject in-depth
  • To adhere to the university's academic integrity and honesty policy
  • To hopefully get cited yourself one day
