Interlibrary Loan for Distance & Online Learning

How to request materials and use Interlibrary Loan services for distance and online students, faculty, and staff.

Considerations Before Submitting Your ILL Request

Please do not submit an ILL request for more than a single chapter in one request. Copyright restrictions limit the amount of a book we may legally supply through Interlibrary Loan. See Obtaining Physical Books if you need multiple or all chapters of a book.

Only submit an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) request when the book chapter you need is not available in full text through the ACU Library and you have time to wait for processing. ILL requests take time for our staff to process and fill.

If you are working on a tight deadline, try using the "Full Text" filter in OneSearch to limit your results to full text availability.

Remember: Do not request required course textbooks through ILL. Contact your instructor and academic advisor ASAP if you are having trouble accessing course readings.

How to Request Book Chapters through ILL

Three Ways To Submit an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Request for a Book Chapter

  1. Find a Chapter Record in OneSearch
If you find a description in OneSearch for the specific chapter that you need, you can submit your chapter request the same way you would submit a journal article request, by clicking on "If item is not available in Catalog or in Journal Finder Get Item Here (Interlibrary Loan)" under the "Access options" dropdown. Ensure the request includes the title of the chapter, the title of the book, the page numbers, and any other relevant information. Then, submit your request.

  2. Submit a Manual Request
If you have the citation information for the chapter you need but are unable to find a corresponding record in OneSearch, you can submit a manual request for the chapter. Accuracy is very important in a manual request, so please ensure that you include all relevant information, especially ISBN and page numbers.

To create a manual request, sign in to your ILL account and click on the "Create Request" button. Fill out the "Article (or Book Chapter)" form, including as much information as possible.

  3. Find a Book Record and Add Notes
If in OneSearch, you are able to find a record for the whole book but not a record for the chapter, you may use that record as a starting point to create your request.

Start the same way you would for an article request, by clicking on "If item is not available in Catalog or in Journal Finder Get Item Here (Interlibrary Loan)" under the "Access options" dropdown. Then, before you submit the request, make sure to clarify that you only need a chapter from the book. Use the comments field to clarify what is needed, including the chapter name and page numbers. Try to be as complete and accurate as possible.
